After closely fought first round qualifying against seasoned Takao Suzuki, Somi removed his frustration on his next 2 opponents to qualify for maindraw of this challenger ... These days Somdev seems to specilaize in giving opponents bagels.

Somdev played all 3 matches in 25 hrs ... That shows his fitness level.

Speedy Somdev Devvarman of India showed the never-give-up spirit that carried him to the past two NCAA singles titles with a spine-tingling 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 victory over Lexington’s 2000 champ Takao Suzuki of Japan. The former Virginia Cavalier recovered from an early service break in the third set to tie, then held four match points in the tiebreaker before losing five straight and facing match point himself. He fired an ace, then captured the next two points.
“This was my first hard-court match since the NCAAs,” said Devvarman, who has won two Futures level events on clay since. “But, I just try to give the same intensity every match.” He breezed through a second-rounder later and must beat Jose Statham of New Zealand at 10 a.m. today to reach the main event.
