Deepak Punia Becomes India's 1st Junior Wrestling World Champion in 18 Years ... The last Indians to emerge gold medallist at the junior world championship were Ramesh Kumar (69 kg) and Palwinder Singh Cheema (130 kg) who stood atop the podium in 2001.
Deepak claimed a gold medal with a win over Russia's Alik Shebzukhov ... The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the 86kg men's freestyle match but the Indian was declared champion because he had scored the last point ... Deepak Punia will also represent India at the upcoming Senior World Championship in Kazakhstan, as he won the trials.
In the 92kg, Viky also scored a close win against Mongolia's Batmagnai Eenkhtuvshin 4-3 to claim bronze.
Akash Antil (Freestyle 97 kg) and Vijay Patil (Freestyle 57 kg) reached in the Bronze medal matches but lost their bout to the superior wrestlers.
In women's wrestling, Anshu lost the bronze medal bout against Ukrainian wrestler, Kateryna Zelenykh, 2-12 in 59 kg category.
